Meniscus Injury

The meniscus is a piece of cartilage that cushions and stabilizes the knee. A healthy meniscus helps to absorb shock and prevent wear and tear of the knee. Common symptoms of a meniscus injury are pain in the knee and complaints of the knee “catching” or “locking”. A meniscus injury can happen to people of all ages. They commonly occur when athletes quickly change directions or when adults twist with their foot planted on the ground.

Meniscus injuries are very common. Pain and function are typically improved with a Physical Therapy treatment plan designed to increase mobility and strength of the knee. A Physical Therapy treatment plan will usually allow patients to avoid surgical repair of the meniscus. Improving strength of the knee will improve your knee’s ability to absorb forces from walking and running and help to take stress off of the meniscus. Your Physical Therapist will design a unique treatment plan to improve mobility, decrease pain, and help you return to your hobbies pain free.
